Update April 8, 2026! - Delta Airlines joins in on the baggage fee increases. Please note that we will do our best to update this post as new information comes available, but it is recommended to check your airline's website for the most up-to-date information!

As of this writing in early April 2026, two U.S.-based airlines have raised their baggage fees for the first time in a long while. You may have noticed the prices at the pump on the rise, and if you travel or plan to travel, it's worth noting that those increases are going to be felt elsewhere. It's important to plan for it now so it doesn't catch you off guard later.

One area where those changes are being felt is with the cost of checked luggage. With summer travel quickly approaching and fuel prices on the rise around the world, expect to pay extra for your checked luggage. So far, (as of this writing) this does not affect carry-on luggage for U.S.-based airlines.

Two airlines (as of this writing) have raised their baggage fees: JetBlue Airways and United Airlines. (Click here to read more about this ongoing story.) If you are a frequent traveler with other airlines, you may expect to see those fees trickle to them as well, but nothing official has been released thus far. One of the best ways to stay informed is by checking the airlines' websites and their 'Baggage' sections for all of the details and up-to-date changes. If you are looking for a quick and easy way to check those, consider using our link on our 'Resources' page on our website, which is a one-stop shop for many of the most commonly used airlines for U.S. travelers. This page is designed to quickly link you to popular and commonly sought-out travel information. Once there, simply click on our 'Baggage Info' tab to be connected with many of the airlines' direct-linked pages for general baggage information. Don't see an airline that you need? Just head to the airline's main page, and typically a link to baggage information is located close to the top of the page.

If you're traveling and want a way to save on luggage and space, check out our favorite travel backpack! We've used this personally for over 7 years, and it's still going strong. And right now, it's under $20 on Amazon! This backpack can not only fit everything you need and be used as a carry-on, but it also has enough room to fit your tablet and laptop! Plus, if you pack light or are going away for a quick trip, you can fit shoes and a few clothes in it as well. We've put this backpack through the paces, and it's been with us from Africa to Australia and many places in between. Click here to check it out!

Will other airlines follow suit? Time will tell. However, I will say that typically when one airline makes a major change, the others follow suit, but not always.

So if you plan to travel soon, just know your airline could increase baggage fees. But don't fret. Hopefully, this is a temporary transition and not a permanent action.
